The Functional Skills English Entry Level course is designed to help learners develop the essential reading, writing, and communication skills needed for everyday life and work. Covering Entry Levels 1, 2, and 3, this course builds confidence in using English effectively — from understanding simple texts to expressing ideas clearly in speech and writing. Whether you’re preparing for employment, further education, or simply want to improve your English skills, this course provides the perfect starting point for your learning journey.

Qualifications Purpose

Functional Skills Qualification in English at Level 2 are for learners to develop understanding and skills in English.

The qualifications give learners the opportunity to:
● Gain a qualification for work, study and life
● Demonstrate the ability at an appropriate level to read, write, speak, listen and communicate in English
● Apply these skills effectively to a range of purposes in the workplace and in other real life situations.

Entry Level 1 Course Content

1. Speaking, Listening & Communicating

  • Texts: simple narratives, information, instructions, short statements, explanations, discussions.

  • Learners should be able to:

    • Say the names of letters of the alphabet

    • Identify and extract main info from short statements/explanations

    • Follow single-step instructions, ask for repetition if required

    • Make requests and simple questions, respond about specific information, make clear statements about basic info, communicate feelings/opinions on straightforward topics.

2. Reading

  • Short, simple texts (inform, describe, narrate).

  • Learners should:

    • Read correctly words designated for Entry 1

    • Read simple sentences with one clause

    • Understand a short piece of text on a simple subject.

3. Writing

  • Texts: short/simple messages, notes.

  • Skills:

    • Punctuate simple sentences with capital letter & full stop

    • Use capital letter for “I” and proper nouns first letter

    • Use lower-case letters when no reason for capitals

    • Write letters of the alphabet in sequence (upper and lower case)

    • Spell correctly words designated for Entry 1.

  • Composition: communicate information in words, phrases, simple sentences.

Entry Level 2 Course Content

1. Speaking, Listening & Communicating

  • Texts: short narratives, explanations, discussions; straightforward information/instructions.

  • Learners should be able to:

    • Identify/extract main information and detail from short explanations

    • Make requests/clear questions in different contexts

    • Respond appropriately to straightforward questions

    • Follow the gist of discussions

    • Clearly express straightforward information and communicate feelings/opinions on a range of straightforward topics

    • Contribute to simple group discussions.

2. Reading

  • Texts: short/straightforward examples (inform, instruct, describe, narrate).

  • Learners should be able to:

    • Read correctly words designated for Entry 2

    • Understand the main points in texts

    • Understand organisational markers in short texts

    • Use strategies to find meaning (e.g., dictionary/spell-checker)

    • Read and understand sentences with more than one clause

    • Use illustrations/images/captions to locate info.

3. Writing

  • Texts: letters, emails, simple narratives.

  • Skills:

    • Basic punctuation (. ? !), full stops etc

    • Form regular plurals

    • Use first & second letters for sequencing words in alphabetical order

    • Spell correctly words designated for Entry 2

    • Compose using words/phrases appropriate for purpose/audience

    • Complete a form asking for personal info (name, address, DOB etc)

    • Write in compound sentences (using conjunctions: and, but, or)

    • Use adjectives and simple linking words appropriately.

Entry Level 3 Course Content

1. Speaking, Listening & Communicating

  • Texts: straightforward narratives, accounts, explanations, instructions, discussions, information, descriptions.

  • Learners should be able to:

    • Identify/extract relevant information and detail from straightforward explanations

    • Make requests + ask concise questions using appropriate language/context

    • Communicate information/opinions clearly on a range of topics

    • Respond appropriately in discussions on straightforward topics

    • Follow and understand the main points of discussions

    • Make relevant contributions to group discussions, respect turn-taking.

2. Reading

  • Texts: straightforward examples (instruct, describe, narrate, explain).

  • Learners should:

    • Read correctly words designated for Entry 3

    • Identify/understand/extract main points and ideas from texts

    • Identify different purposes of straightforward texts

    • Use effective strategies to find meaning of words (dictionary, context)

    • Understand organisational features and use them to locate info (contents/index/menus/links).

3. Writing

  • Texts: straightforward examples such as narratives, instructions, explanations, reports.

  • Learners should:

    • Read a range of different text types confidently and fluently, applying knowledge/understanding of texts to their own writing

    • Write texts of varying complexity, with accuracy, effective spelling, punctuation and grammar

    • Understand when and for whom planning, drafting and using formal language are important and when less so

    • Use these Functional Skills autonomously, applying them in a range of formal/informal contexts in workplace and real life.

Qualifications Aims and Outcomes

  • These qualifications build the foundation of reading, writing, speaking/listening and communicating in English.
  • The content at each Entry Level subsumes and builds on the level below it.

Progression Opportunities

After completing this qualification, learners can progress to:

  • Functional Skills English Level 1
  • Other qualifications in English (Level 1 Certificate/Award) or further learning/ vocational training.

Assessment

  • The qualification is made up of three mandatory components: Reading, Writing, and Speaking, Listening & Communicating (SLC).
  • For example: Reading and Writing are assessed through externally-set controlled assessments; SLC may be internally assessed.
  • According to the regulatory requirements: At Entry level the total assessment time is no less than 1h30 and no more than 2 hours for the combined components.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements, but a basic level of English is recommended. Level 1 or a diagnostic assessment may be used to guide placement.
